Ruth Bruciaga scored late to lead the New Mexico women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Utah State in Friday's Mountain West opener.
In the 76th minute, Bruciaga netted the game's lone goal off a corner kick. It is her first of the season. It also secured UNM's first win ever against Utah State.
The Lobos (3-5-0, 1-0 MW) attemped 17 shots, including five from Madisyn Olguin, while limiting Utah State to only six. The Aggies (5-4-0, 0-1-0 MW) did not have a shot through the entire first half.
UNM goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich made two saves. It was her 21st career win for the Lobos, moving her into a tie for third in the record books with Shannon Adragna.
“Cassie made a huge play on saving that breakaway to keep the game scoreless," Lobo head coach Heather Dyche said in a statement. "I thought she displayed great composure in the box. For her to move into third in all-time wins with Shannon Adragna is a great accomplishment."
UNM continues its conference-opening road trip Sunday at Boise State. The game begins at 1 p.m.
