Volleyball: Lobos goes 1-2 at USC Classic

New Mexico’s volleyball squad didn’t leave California empty handed.

After dropping the first two matches at the USC Classic, UNM took a thrilling five-set victory over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon.

The battle ended UNM’s weekend on a high note, after falling 3-1 to Pepperdine (8-2) and dropping a 3-0 match against the undefeated USC Trojans, who are now 10-0 on the year.

New Mexico found itself down 2-0 to Idaho State (6-5) in the tournament finale. However, the Lobos took the following two sets each by a 25-18 count.

Outside hitter Julia Warren led the attack on the day with 16 kills. Head coach Jeff Nelson said in a release that Warren and setter Hannah Johnson got into a solid rhythm, which enabled Warren’s offensive success.

“First two games, we struggled,” Nelson said in the release. “We didn’t pass the ball well and we struggled to make plays. In game three we had a game-changing moment with a controversial call on a serve, and it got our team fired up. It really helped us get going and from there on out, we just seemed to build and got better.”
