So far, the nonconference schedule for the New Mexico women’s soccer team is proving to be as challenging as advertised.
The Lobos gave up four goals -- two in each half -- and failed to score in a shutout loss at Colorado on Sunday. UNM (1-3) opened its season with two losses to No. 1 Florida State and then No. 15 Texas Tech, with road tests at Minnesota and Michigan State still looming.
“I thought we didn’t compete hard enough for the entire game,” UNM head coach Heather Dyche said in a statement. “Despite that, we were able to create some scoring opportunities that probably should have been goals. We need to work on keeping our composure when attacking in the final third.”
Despite giving up four goals, UNM redshirt senior goalie Cassie Ulrich made five saves. Of the Lobos’ 12 shots, only four were on goal (one each by midfielders senior Dylann O’Connor, sophomore Claire Lynch, sophomore Casey Murphy and senior Alyssa Coonrod).
Colorado’s Buffaloes scored its goals via Danica Evans at the 7:02 mark, Stephanie Zuniga-Herrera at 41:11, Joss Orejel at 53:23 and Brittney Stark at 73:55.
Before the Sept. 11 game at Minnesota and the Sept. 13 contest at Michigan State, UNM hosts Idaho State this Thursday at 2 p.m.
