Baseball
Close losses have haunted the UNM baseball team this season, and this past weekend was no different.
The Lobos were swept by Wichita State, and two of those losses were by just one run. UNM has lost 11 games this year by a single run.
UNM had a brief 5-3 lead on Sunday after a three-run fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder Andre Vigil walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run and freshman catcher Scott Graham hit a two-RBI single. The Shockers (17-26) responded with a three-run fifth inning of their own to take a 6-5 lead.
The Lobos (24-19, 13-8 MW) were able to load the bases in the next inning but were unable to tie or take back the lead.
UNM returns to conference play this upcoming weekend with a three-game series against Nevada.
Softball
The UNM softball team lost its series finale at San Diego State 10-2 in six innings on Sunday.
SDSU took an early 3-0 lead with two home runs in the third inning. The Lobos cut the Aztecs’ lead to just two after a run in the fourth.
The Aztecs (31-18, 15-9) went to outscore the Lobos 7-1 for the rest of the game.
UNM won the first game of the series 8-6, then lost the second contest 5-4 in eight innings.
The Lobos are now 25-23 overall and 9-9 in the Mountain West.
