On Friday, the Lobos’ match against the Drexel Dragons ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Lobos scored the first goal 37 minutes into the game. Senior defender Nick Miele found the net with an assist by sophomore midfielder Josh Goss. This was the only goal scored in the first half.
Most of the action in the second half took place in the middle of the field. However, in the 77th minute, Drexel managed to tie the game.
During overtime, the Lobos were desperately looking for the winner, but Dexel’s defense remained strong.
“It’s a funny one. It was a tie, but it sure felt like a loss. Just gut-wrenching,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “This team put so much into it. It was almost like, ‘how do you not get results?’ They expect it and want it so bad. I felt the same way. I was just gutted after Friday.”
Fishbein gave credit to Drexel and described the team as an “organized and fit team” that defended well.
Anxious to improve their weekend, the Lobos (5-1-1) wasted no time on Sunday when they played against the VCU Rams.
Less than a minute into the match, the Lobos managed to get the first corner kick. Nothing came out of it, but in the 17th minute sophomore midfielder/forward Niko Hansen scored the first goal with an assist from senior midfielder/defender Oniel Fisher.
VCU was not shaken by the Lobos’ lead. Both teams battled in the field and the Rams outshot the Lobos 6-5 during the first half.
In the second half New Mexico reversed that and outshot VCU 13-4. The second goal for the Lobos came in the 74th minute. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Christopher Wehan scored from 22 yards away.
“This puts us in a better position,” said Hansen. “I think we are doing really well with our record right now. That was a really good team and to get two goals and a shutout, I think that’s a good sign for us moving on.”
