#RelationshipStatus: Holding out for a hero

A weekly column about the modern search for love at UNM.

@JoshuaDolin

When you think of a superhero, what comes to mind? If you are like my friends and me, then you might be thinking of rippling muscles, a stylish outfit and a cape that just won’t stop.

But that is not the only reason we are attracted to heroes, right?
Last week I went to see “Thor: The Dark World” at midnight with Alice, Ashley, and Alice’s boyfriend, Bill. Alice and Bill went because they like the story and it was date night, but Ashley and I went because there is nothing better than staring at a hot man for two hours on a Thursday night.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I highly recommend that you do. His shirt comes off within the first 10 minutes so you know that you are getting your money’s worth.

Once the movie was over, and we all sufficiently wished that we were Jane Foster, the girls and I went home.

“I like heroes because they are there to protect you, which is the thing I want most in a man,” Ashley said. “Just to know that there is someone who wants nothing more than to keep you safe.”

“I think muscles are a big part of why I am so attracted to heroes,” Alice responded. “But they also risk everything for the ones they love, and what more could a girl ask for?”

“Oh yeah, heroes in movies have tight hot abs, a golden tan and are manly, which is exactly what I need,” Ashley said.

I agreed with both of them. I think that is what we all want out of a relationship — someone who loves us and would do anything to save us. But from what?

“The man I spend the rest of my life with will be a hero,” Ashley said. “Because he will have special qualities, or powers if you will, that no other man has. And he will rescue me from my lonely life.”

Is that what a modern hero is to us? Someone who can save us from another lonely night watching Netflix in bed?

There may not be an Iron Man or a Captain America in real life, but what does a guy have to do to be one of those superheroes for us? Do they need to save the world from Loki, or do they just need to take us on a date?

I decided that I had not had enough of seeing muscular men in tight costumes so I watched “The Avengers,” “Captain America,” and “Thor” on Netflix over the weekend. What had been missing this whole time? I always thought that superhero movies were for comic book nerds, but they are not at all!

Those movies speak to girls, or gay boys, because we all dream of having someone as super as these men are.

Collette agreed that she looks for many superhero qualities in her dates.

“I like a man that can take control and doesn’t have to wait for me to initiate things,” Collette said. “They are just the right amount of cocky to where it is sexy, but not too annoying.”

Sure Collette’s favorite superhero is Iron Man, but the qualities she likes in him are not his strength, wealth or fame. She searches for men who can model his style of confidence and care for women.

Since I have recently discovered a love for superheroes, I decided that I needed to talk to Aurora since she is the expert. Her favorite superhero is Spider-Man because he is a “sexy nerd” which is the type of guy she is looking for.

“To be honest all superheroes are insanely hot, and that’s all I need to know,” Aurora said.

When she and I are not re-watching Disney movies or “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” together, we are usually watching superhero movies just to see their muscles.

Maggie disagreed with all of us. “I just want a normal guy. I’m not super, and he doesn’t need to be either,” she said. “But I do like superheroes because their lives are way more interesting than mine.”

The reason I like to watch superhero movies is because they give me hope that I can find my own hero in life. Someone who is strong, loving and willing to risk his life to save me. And I think that is why we all need a hero.

“A hero is someone that would make me a better person,” Ashley said. “It’s the kind of guy I dream about and hope to spend the rest of my life with because he will truly be super.”

“Bill and my parents are my superheroes,” Alice said. “Because I know that they would do anything for me.”

“My mom is also my real-life superhero,” Collette said. “Because she gives me motivation every day and sends me candy when I am upset.”

I agreed with Collette. Maybe I watch these movies because I dream of Thor saving me and protecting me with his biceps and perfectly conditioned hair, but that is not who my real hero is.

Heroes are the people who believe in us, protect us, and are the first people we turn to when things go wrong. So my mom is my superhero. Hopefully one day I can find my own Captain America, but no one will ever have more superpowers than my mom.

My friends and I do not want men with iron suits, or men who can summon lightning, or even men who have super strength. We all want men with a super amount of love for us.

We want a man who can protect us, and care for us. A man who can make us feel like the most important person in the world, and never stop believing in us. Heroes are all around us. They may not have perfect biceps or a fierce costume, but they care for us. We all need a hero, and hopefully we can all find one. But if I can’t find one of these heroes, am I always going to be #WaitingToBeSaved?
