UNM names Flanagan's successor

The search for the UNM head women’s basketball didn’t take too long.

The candidate was in UNM’s backyard.

Associate head coach Yvonne Sanchez was named the Lobo women’s basketball team’s head coach Friday at news conference.

The decision came 19 days after Don Flanagan resigned. Flanagan left the program because five freshmen informed him on their intentions to quit the team. Sanchez has been a 12-year member of Flanagan’s staff at the University.

Sanchez interviewed for the position with Athletics Director Paul Krebs on Monday, and she turned out to be the perfect fit. She earned the job over Bowling Green’s Curt Miller — who Krebs hired in 2001 while he was BGSU’s athletic director — West Texas A&M head coach Krista Gerlich and Texas A&M associate head coach Vic Schaefer. Schaefer was part of the Aggies’ staff that won this year’s women’s national championship.
