Event seeks to promote disability awareness

Students can discover what it's like to be blind or in a wheelchair at an event sponsored by UNM's Associated Students for Empowerment.

Fifteen campus and community organizations have teamed up to host Disability Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today outside the SUB.

The groups will lead activities and educate people about the challenges some face daily.

"We are hoping this will open students' eyes, whether they have a disability or not," said Sheila Campos, ASE vice president.

Campos said the event will raise awareness about issues that make it difficult for students with disabilities to attend classes.

Students can be blindfolded and led through an obstacle course by a blind student, maneuver a wheelchair around campus or compete against the Albuquerque Kings in wheelchair basketball.

"We're hoping students will volunteer to hop in a wheelchair and play basketball from a wheelchair," said Carla Josephson, ASE secretary.

After each activity, students can take a survey about facility access on campus to determine what needs improvement, she said.

Josephson said ASE is also looking for students who are interested in advocating for disability rights.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, but ASE plans to host a Disability Awareness Day next semester, as well.

Friday's event will focus on disabled veterans, Josephson said. Representatives from veterans organizations will hand out information on resources and rights.

"Disabilities don't have to be visual or physical," said Eric Ross, member of Student Veterans of UNM.

People also have experiences that have long-lasting negative effects, such as dealing with debilitating emotional and traumatic issues, he said.

At the event, the student veterans group will answer questions and tell disabled veterans how to find services.

"These resources are available to help them lead a full life," Ross said. "We want to let them know that there are people out there to help them succeed."

Student Veterans of UNM will also accept donations of clothing, blankets and toiletries Friday for their winter clothing drive.
