Crime Watch

April 23

A UNM Police officer was dispatched to the Mental Health Center because a staff member requested assistance with a patient who had become verbally abusive. The man said he was tired of waiting after six hours. The man said all he wanted was to talk to someone. The man left, and no charges were filed.

April 24

UNM Hospital security guards filed a report with UNM Police about a staff member in the emergency room who threatened to harm others. The statements were not made to specific people, but the staff member said, "If only I had a gun, I would shoot someone." The staff member was placed on administrative leave.

April 25

A UNM Police officer was dispatched to UNM Hospital because a patient kicked two nurses. The nurse said the patient kicked him after he tried changing the bedding. When another nurse tried securing the patient, he kicked that nurse in the chest. One of the nurses was punched in the face two or three times. The nurse said the patient was disoriented. The patient has been on medication ever since the incident.

April 25

UNM Police received a report of shoplifting at the Student Residence Center corner store. Two police officers were dispatched to the area and attempted to locate the suspect. The clerk on duty said the suspect tried to steal Gatorade. The clerk said he confronted the individual, who gave back the drink and left the store. The clerk said the man was "babbling incoherently, preaching nonsensical theology" and was "belligerent and incomprehensible." Police officers caught the man and plan to send him a criminal summons for the misdemeanor charge of shoplifting.
