UNM services aim to encourage mental wellness

Students, staff and faculty received information about mental health Wednesday outside the SUB for Mental Health Awareness Day.

Event coordinator Christine Tally said the most common mental disorders seen at the Student Health Center are depression and anxiety.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 26.2 percent of Americans over 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder.

"Many students are unaware of their own mental disorders," Tally said. "And the majority of them discover them while in college."

Natahnee Winder, coordinator at the Student Health Center, said anyone can suffer from a mental illness.

"We're here to help students practice wellness, to be aware of mental health issues, and to help them relieve stress," she said. "With finals coming up, we'll all be stressed, and the Student Health Center is here to help any student that needs help with stress or any other issues that they may have."

Graduate student Michelle Touson said she attended the event because she wanted to gather information on mental illness.

"I'm working with a few student organizations on campus to put together a discussion panel for high school girls about domestic violence," she said. "We want to get to them early so that the stress and the vicious cycle of abuse doesn't take them in."

There were 17 organizations at the event, including First Nations Community Healthcare, Agora Crisis Center, the Mind Research Institute and the National Alliance on Mental Disorders.

Ingrid Kloetz, a case manager for First Nations, said the organization would take in anyone who needs help with mental health issues.

"People from UNM Cares are with us twice a week, and we have behavioral health counselors and psychiatrists on staff to help anyone with mental health or mental disorder issues," she said.
