Students from around the world shared their culture, customs and cuisine with the UNM community on Thursday.

The Office of International Programs and Studies held its annual International Festival and Study Abroad Fair at Cornell Mall.

About 20 booths represented dozens of countries, including Turkey, India and Russia.

Ken Carpenter, the associate director of International Programs and Studies, said the festival gave students a worldly experience.

"We see it as a real chance for the international students to share their culture with UNM students," he said. "We work on it for months, and a lot of the work is done by the international students, and our staff helps coordinate it."

The festival presented students with information about study abroad programs offered at UNM.

Sophomore Desiree Quinones-Soria said she attended the event for the entertainment.

"I really enjoyed the folklorico dancing," she said. "It was very nice, very passionate and beautiful."

Senior Victoria Otero, who is enrolled in flamenco classes at UNM, said the dance program is world-renowned.

"I had danced folklorico for a long time, and I stopped," she said. "It was recommended to me to take this class, so I took it and loved it. It's super passionate."

Gala Yershevich sold authentic items from Russia, including wood carvings, papier-mache boxes and nesting dolls.
