Daily Lobo: So, what brings you to the SUB this afternoon?
Christopher Van der Merwe: I just thought I would get some studying in. As you can see, I'm sort of taking a break.
DL: How long have you been playing the piano?
CV: Well, my class got canceled - so since 12:30 p.m., I think.
DL: How long have you known how to play the piano?

CV: Since right after I got out of the Army. So, since 2005. For three years now.
DL: What made you start playing?
CV: My brother. He plays really amazingly. I like to listen to him. I saw him playing one day and sort of just picked it up.
DL: I saw that you were playing from memory. So, you have a lot songs memorized?
CV: I have a lot of songs memorized, yeah.
DL: How difficult is it to memorize songs?
CV: Not too bad. Once you start playing, it sort of just comes to you.
DL: What were you playing just now?
CV: The names? I'm not 100 percent sure. This one is French. "Mariar de Amor," or something like that.
DL: So you play music in your free time?
CV: Yeah. Hopefully, it will keep my fingers pretty strong and good so that I can become a surgeon one day. That would be nice.
DL: So, what is your favorite type of music?
CV: This is an embarrassing answer. Actually, techno. Trance - that's the nice way to put it. I like different sounds that don't need lyrics in the background.
DL: Well, I'll let you get back to your playing then.
CV: Yeah. I should probably get back to studying. I'm planning on taking the MCAT in May.
DL: Good luck with that.
CV: Thanks. I'll probably need it.
