NM Tech gets $1.8 million
to research water for study
HOBBS (AP) - Lea County has been awarded a $1.8 million grant to help the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology research ways to reuse some of the water used in oilfield production. The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, starts this summer.
California fire sends 1,000
fleeing from their homes
SIERRA MADRE, Calif. (AP) - Crews overcame a threatening flare-up during the night and worked Monday to halt a wildfire northeast of Los Angeles that has sent 1,000 people fleeing their homes. Water-dropping aircraft were back in the air Monday to complement ground crews as more than 580 firefighters attacked the blaze.
Ukrainian helicopter crash kills 20 in botched landing

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - A helicopter belonging to Ukraine's state gas company crashed Monday as it tried to land on a Black Sea drilling platform, killing 20 people, officials said. The Mi-8 helicopter went down about 40 miles offshore.
