State imposes restrictions in face of high fire danger
SANTA FE (AP) - The state is putting restrictions on campfires, open fires, smoking and fireworks in 23 of New Mexico's 33 counties starting Friday. Restrictions are being imposed because of high winds, low humidity and low precipitation that have increased fire danger across the state.
Judge declares a mistrial in case against pathologist
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A federal judge declared a mistrial Tuesday in the fraud case against celebrity pathologist Cyril Wecht, who was accused of using his staff at the county coroner's office to do work for his lucrative private practice. Wecht gained fame by inquiring into the deaths of well-known figures including Elvis Presley, JonBenet Ramsey and Vincent Foster.
Afghanistan violence spike leaves 40 dead in two days
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Militants killed 17 road workers in Afghanistan's lawless south Tuesday, part of a spike in violence that left 40 people dead over two days. Sixteen other construction workers were wounded in the attack in Zabul's Shinkay district, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said.
