UNM celebrates International Women's Day

Two UNM organizations will celebrate International Women's Day on Saturday.

Monica Garcia, president of the Women's Law Caucus, said that instead of having a one-day celebration, the caucus will have events all month.

"This year, we chose to focus on ending violence against women," she said.

Garcia said the Women's Law Caucus has hosted a series of drives and fundraisers that benefit the Urban Indian Advocacy Program, which supports American-Indian women who have suffered domestic violence in Albuquerque.

Sandrea Gonzales, director of the Women's Resource Center, said the center will award scholarships to female law students.

The Sabrina Single Mothers Scholarship was founded in 2002 by Gonzales and will be presented to four students Saturday.

Stacy Allison, a second-year law student and mother of a 7-year-old, is one of the recipients.

"While attending law school is challenging," Allison said, "attending as a single mom is very challenging."

Garcia said the Justice Mary Walters Award - an annual award given to pioneering women in the legal community - will be presented March 27 to Dean Suellyn Scarnecchia, the School of Law's first female dean.

Gonzales said the Women's Resource Center will co-sponsor guest speaker Asra Q. Nomani.

Nomani is a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal who was a close friend of Daniel Pearl, a journalist who was shot and killed in Pakistan in 2002. Nomani will speak at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on March 15.

Gonzales said the center celebrates its 36th anniversary this year.

"We believe it's important to have a presence on this campus to address the issues that affect women, staff, students and community members," she said.

International Women's Day was first celebrated in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1911. It was attached to March 8 to celebrate Russian women who went on a four-day strike for bread and peace in 1917.

The strike ended with the abdication of the Czar and the government granting women the right to vote.
