GPSA delays presidential election

Staff report

GPSA voted unanimously to delay its presidential election for three weeks during a special meeting Saturday.

The election, originally scheduled for April 7 to 10, will now be held April 28 to May 1.

Elections Chairman Tarrance LeNoir said the Graduate and Professional Student Association decided to postpone the election to abide by the group's constitution.

"We missed some important deadlines in the election process," he said. "We basically postponed the elections about a month. We just wanted to make sure that we were following our constitution and all of the election bylaws."

According to the GPSA constitution, the election must take place the first week of April.

The election must also be publicized for a minimum of 25 days before it takes place, according to the constitution.

LeNoir said he plans to run three quarter-page ads in the Daily Lobo this week outlining the candidates' positions.

LeNoir took over as elections chairman March 10 after Michelle Touson resigned from the position Feb. 17.

Because of the transition, LeNoir said he didn't have enough time to advertise the elections.

He said candidates can download applications at Unm.edu/~gpsa. Candidates must submit paperwork to the GPSA office in the SUB by April 9.

"We're actively trying to get everything out and go above and beyond to assure that this is a fair election," he said. "Our whole focus is to get things moving forward and to be a transparent student organization on campus."
