GPSA appoints three council members

Staff report

GPSA appointed new members to its council Monday.

The group has been without chairpersons for elections, specialized travel and projects for about a month.

The positions were vacated after two Graduate and Professional Student Association members resigned and one decided to take a new role in the council.

Lindsey Ives was selected as the projects chairwoman, Sean Haines was appointed specialized travel chairman and Tarrance LeNoir took over as elections chairman.

GPSA council chairman Chris Ramirez said members have had to shoulder extra responsibilities while they waited for the positions to be filled.

"People who are currently involved have had to step up their commitment," he said.

LeNoir said he looked forward to being elections chairman.

"I'm excited and probably overwhelmed at the same time," he said. "I think we have a coalition of people who are really doing great things on the GPSA council."

GPSA president Joseph Garcia said he hand-picked LeNoir for the position.

"I chose Tarrance because he's been attentive at all the meetings," he said. "He's been very helpful. He's very knowledgeable, and we can count on him."

Garcia said it was important to fill the vacancies in GPSA before his term ends.

Ramirez said GPSA is searching for presidential candidates.

"We'll have an election scheduled sometime between April 5 and April 7," he said. "It's a one-day election where graduate students can go and vote."
