ASUNM senators to host eco-friendly fashion show

ASUNM senators will wrap up a week of promoting recycling by hosting an eco-friendly fashion show called Project Greenway.

Models in the show will wear homemade outfits made of recyclable materials.

The show is at noon today in the SUB Atrium.

Senators of the Associated Students of UNM assisted the University in competing with other campuses during RecycleMania - a 10-week friendly competition over who can collect the most cans or recycle the most paper goods.

The competition ends in April.

ASUNM Sen. Adrian Carver said using recyclable materials in a fashion show became a part of RecycleMania about a month ago.

"We're trying to showcase recycling and promote the uses of recyclable materials, so the outfits that the models will be wearing will be judged on how creative they are and how much they use recyclable materials," he said.

Carver said about 10 models will participate in the show.

The winner will get a gift card to Starbucks, he said.

Resource conservation manager Linda McCormick said she appreciated the efforts students put into RecycleMania.

"Anything that people do that increases the visibility of people's awareness of recycling is definitely a good thing," she said.

McCormick said the University has entered one of the RecycleMania competition categories.

"This is the first time we're participating, and we're participating in the cardboard category," she said. "It's a big deal. We're supposed to submit information for the amount of cardboard we collect every week. It's kind of hard for me because I don't get the figures every week."

Carver said ASUNM senators are working on launching a bigger campaign for next semester. The campaign will focus on painting the University's brown recycling bins, he said.

"It's going through the University design committee, and the recycle bins will be artsy, but the point is to draw attention to them and get students to recycle more," he said.
