DWI offenders to be sentenced at school
(AP) - Valencia County Magistrate Daniel H. Hawkes wants to show high school seniors the real deal when he sentences six people who pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated. He's preparing to set up his court Thursday in the Belen High School auditorium, where the defendants will appear in handcuffs and leg shackles and will be guarded by police officers in uniform.
Detroit mayor, former aide plead not guilty
DETROIT (AP) - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges they lied under oath about having an affair. The mayor and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty appeared for separate hearings in the scandal that is threatening to prematurely end Kilpatrick's second term.
37 injured in 70-vehicle pileup in Austria
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - About 70 vehicles slammed into each other Tuesday in heavy snowfall on a highway in northwestern Austria, killing one person and injuring at least 37 others, police said. Police in the province of Upper Austria said six of the injured people were seriously hurt.
