Summit to discuss 2008-09 budget recommendations

Staff report

UNM's budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year will be discussed today from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in SUB Ballroom C.

The budget, which will go into effect on July 1, will be presented to the Board of Regents at its March 12 meeting.

President David Schmidly said the goal of the summit is to discuss the recommendations of UNM's main constituencies: Associated Students of UNM, Graduate and Professional Student Association, Faculty Senate, Dean's Council and Staff Council.

"We want to get input from students, staff, faculty and other administrators to see their viewpoints on the budget for the upcoming year," Schmidly said.

The budget was partially formed by the Legislature, which approved a 2 percent tuition-credit increase.

It also approved a 2 percent raise in faculty and staff salaries.

The credit increase means the University will have to increase tuition by at least 2 percent.

For New Mexico residents, that can cost students about $45 per semester. Out-of-state students will have to dish out an extra $150 next semester.

Schmidly said no final decisions on tuition can be made until a budget is approved by the Board of Regents.

Administrators, faculty, staff and students will present their proposals for the budget, including plans for increases in tuition, fees and salaries for next year.

"We're not going to see a finalized budget after tomorrow's meeting," said Andrew Cullen, associate vice president of Budget, Planning and Analysis. "It's an opportunity to get those proposed initiatives out on the table for discussion. Really, it's the first step in planning the budget."

Schmidly said students should attend the budget summit.

"Students pay a lot of the bills with tuition," he said. "It will be nice to hear what they have to say about the budget."
