On-campus food selection has support of some students

Aramark, UNM's food-service provider, may have taken flak from students, but some are happy with the dining on campus.

Eli Gendron said the food at La Posada, UNM's dining hall, could be better, but it isn't bad considering it's mass-produced.

"It's decent," he said. "They could do with a larger selection and better quality. This lasagna tastes a little funky - at least I think it's lasagna. They could do with a bit better quality."

Gendron said La Posada has healthy options, but students don't always take advantage of them.

"You see people come in, and they pile their plates with meats and sweets," he said. "You don't see any vegetables on there, and then they go and blame La Po."

Shara Marron, La Posada's weekend supervisor, said UNM's dining hall is always being improved upon.

Students may have their complaints, but Marron works to provide quality service, she said.

"I have a policy: If I'm not going to eat it, I'm not going to serve it," she said.

But Aramark's service isn't perfect, Marron said.

"What I do think they need to do here at Aramark also is provide more vegetarian dishes," she said. "I think that is one improvement they can make to satisfy the students."

Student Hunter Allmon said he doesn't have any trouble with on-campus dining.

"It's a little different. You can tell it is mass-produced," he said. "It's not the same as home cooking, but there isn't a huge difference. I just really love the food here."

But if UNM does change contracts, Marron said it will be interesting to see.

"I think that it might be ready for a change. The students might not be prepared for what they're in for, because every company has standards that they say are above health code and what everyone expects," she said. "But another company might come in, and it might be better, but who knows? This is a big corporation that we are talking about here, and I don't know - I'm kind of interested to see."
