Fair aims to suit up students for jobs

Career Services will host a job fair in the SUB on Tuesday.

This year's job fair will be the largest UNM has hosted, said Jenna Crabb, director of Career Services. More than 120 employers are attending, she said.

"It's awesome. I mean, this is our largest event," Crabb said. "It's exciting."

Mary Montano, manager of employee relations at Career Services, said students may feel overwhelmed with more than 120 employers to choose from.

"If you do your homework, make your list and see who you want to meet with," Montano said. "Students can go right to that table, visit with the people in order of priority, and then if they have time, visit the others."

Career Services lists the companies represented at the fair at www.Career.Unm.edu/.

Crabb said that aside from researching employers, students should bring several copies of their résumés and dress professionally.

"Be prepared to put your business front out there and meet these recruiters and tell them, 'Hey, I'm the person you need to look at,'" she said.

Crabb said she recommends students attend the fair even if they are not looking for a job because the event is a great opportunity for networking.

"Find out who's hiring, who's not," she said. "Find out what companies are present here and who wants UNM students. It is the recruiters' main responsibility to find you. They come to us, so you're going to get interviews. You're going to get recognition."

Montano said employers come to UNM because they know they will find talent on campus.

"They have done their homework," she said. "They know that our students are of the highest academic caliber. Also, they have a strong work ethic, and we have diversity. It's win-win for everybody."

Student Dorian Folie said he is looking for work and will probably attend the fair.

"It's helping the students who are looking for jobs," Folie said. "And you want to employ everybody. So, I think it's a good thing for students."
