Clinton leads Obama by 117 votes in NM

As New Mexico's polling results dwindled in early Wednesday, there was still no clear winner for the state's Democratic caucus.

Sen. Hillary Clinton led Sen. Barack Obama by just 117 votes with 98 percent of precincts reporting by 1 a.m.

Clinton had 65,845 of the votes, while Obama had 65,728.

New Mexico was the only state in Super Tuesday that had not declared a winner.

Not enough ballots and a huge voter turnout kept many polling locations open until 9 p.m., two hours past their scheduled time to close.

Closer to campus, voters flooded the Monte Vista Christian Church to decide the next Democratic presidential candidate.

"It's been hundreds, it's been thousands, and it's been constant," said Phil Tonne, a volunteer with the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

Tonne worked at the provisional ballot desk.

The provisional ballot is for voters unable to vote in their own districts, like many UNM students.

The ballots will be checked to ensure the voter is a registered Democrat, then it will be sent to the voter's original precinct to be counted, said Samuel Bartmess, a volunteer with the party.

"It just helps because if they do go to school, and they want to get their vote cast, they can go to class and not have to drive back home," Bartmess said. "The only caveat is that it takes a day or two to really count them."

Student Bianca Zamora, of Rio Arriba County, could not return home to vote because of weather conditions.

"I didn't think I'd be able to go, so I'm glad I got the opportunity," she said.

Zamora said this year's election is important, and young people should take the opportunity to vote.

"I want somebody that is going to make a difference," she said. "I voted so I could say that I had something to do with it."
