OMI rules 78-year-old's death a homicide

LAS CRUCES - A 78-year-old woman found dead in her home with her hands and legs bound behind her back on Oct. 29 died of asphyxia, the state Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque said. The OMI ruled the death of Klara Deitz, 78, as a homicide. According to a police report, she had been hogtied with her hands and feet bound by a thin rope.

50-car pileup shuts down Highway 99

FRESNO, Calif. - Fifty vehicles piled up in a chain-reaction accident in dense fog Tuesday, scattering mangled cars along a three-mile stretch of highway and injuring as many as a dozen people, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash, reported just before 8:20 a.m., shut down part of the southbound lanes of Highway 99 south of Fresno.

U.S. prepares to prosecute 9/11 plotters

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Nearly 6 1/2 years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. is preparing to prosecute six of the men it says are responsible. But the trial and verdicts remain a long way off in the death penalty cases.
