Senate passes NM budget, awaits governor's approval
SANTA FE (AP) - The Senate on Wednesday approved a $6 billion state budget for next year, finishing early the main task for lawmakers in this 30-day legislative session. If the House goes along with changes the Senate made to the budget package, it would go to Gov. Bill Richardson for his signature. Senate Finance Chairman John Arthur Smith said he expected the House to concur, and he predicted the bill would be on Richardson's desk by the weekend.

ROME (AP) - Italy's president dissolved parliament on Wednesday, clearing the way for early elections this spring, just two years after the last parliamentary vote. The president made the decision after Premier Romano Prodi's center-left government fell late last month and subsequent efforts to form an interim government to change voting rules proved unsuccessful.
