Rio Arriba county declared disaster area

SANTA FE - Gov. Bill Richardson has declared Rio Arriba County a disaster area due to heavy snow that has blocked roads and left residents stranded in their homes. Richardson said emergency management, state police and the state Department of Transportation will be available for emergencies and to support local efforts to clear roads.

Mormons select new church president

SALT LAKE CITY - Thomas S. Monson, a leader who became known for his folksy storytelling as he ascended through church ranks, was introduced Monday as the 16th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Monson, 80, succeeds Gordon B. Hinckley, who died last month at age 97. Hinckley was buried Saturday.

Turkish forces bomb Kurdish rebels

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish warplanes on Monday bombed some 70 Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq, the military said. It was the fifth aerial attack against Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq in two months.
