Staff Report:
Black History Month begins on campus 11 a.m. Friday with a flag-raising ceremony outside of Scholes Hall.
President David Schmidly will speak, followed by the raising of the Pan-African flag by students and members of ROTC, African-American Student Services and the community.
There will be kickoff celebration at noon in the SUB with step performances by three historically African-American fraternities and sororities: Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Kappa Delta Chi.
Theta Nu Xi, a multicultural sorority, will also perform.
It is the first time the four organizations have performed together on campus, said Ogechi Chibueze, president of Black Student Union.

She said students are organizing many of the month's events and working together to make sure young people have a strong voice in the proceedings.
"This semester and this Black History Month are going to be one to remember, because students aren't afraid and are collaborating together," Chibueze said.
A calendar of events for Black History Month can be found at African-American Student Services in Mesa Vista Hall.
