by Xochitl Campos

Homecoming is a chance to get students involved on campus, the Lobo Spirit director said.

"We wanted to promote general spirit among students from all walks of life," Cate Wisdom said.

Lobo Spirit is responsible for coordinating activities for homecoming week, which ends Saturday when the football team takes on BYU.

Student Orlando Ramirez said it is important to have homecoming activities on campus to promote school spirit.

"Hopefully, I'll get to be involved," he said. "If I see the

opportunity, I definitely will."

Homecoming week brings UNM together as a community, said ASUNM Vice President

Matt Barnes.

"It has a lot to do with alumni," he said. "The school is bringing back its alumni for homecoming, and that is really one of the big things about it."

ASUNM is looking for dedication to the University in its candidates for homecoming king and queen, Barnes said.

"Homecoming revolves around the king and queen," he said. "You're trying to find two people that represent the school."

For most candidates, it is an opportunity to reach out to their fellow students, said Justin Aderhold, a candidate for king.

Aderhold said he wanted to get involved in the election to raise awareness about important issues on campus.

"With the recent racial instances that have been happening on campus, it would be good for UNM to see diversity within its homecoming court," he said. "I didn't see anyone else black running, and I'm just trying to fill the void."

Student Adrian Tapia said homecoming doesn't impact the student body.

"I think it is important traditionally," he said. "I don't really think that people care. I didn't know that was the type of thing UNM did."
