There's more to the Student Health Center than waiting rooms and cold stethoscopes.

"The Student Health Center is not a one-nurse clinic," said Jo Antreasian, a nurse at the center. "We offer doctors, allergy and immunization services, full X-ray services, pharmacy, psychology services, blood work and many other specialty services."

The center will host a health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Cornell Mall between the SUB and Mesa Vista Hall.

The cost for treatment at the Student Health Center is often about the same or less than insurance co-pays, Antreasian said.

The fair will highlight services that are offered to improve students' lives personally and academically, she said.

"Healthy students get more out of college," she said. "That's why we're here."

It will feature 28 participants offering services such as blood sugar and pressure testing, and weight and body mass index checks.

There will be drawings and giveaways from businesses, including Papa John's Pizza, Kelly's Brew Pub, and Chocolate Cafe and Bakery.

Counseling and Therapy Services will be at the fair to provide information about depression, life balance, relationship and communication issues, and sleep disturbances, said Harry Linneman, director of the service.

"Though students are aware there is help for these issues, it sometimes never rises to the level of taking action, coming to the clinic or visiting the Web site," he said. "We're hoping to come to them (at the fair)."

Students can also get information about birth control at the fair, said Rena Covell, a nurse with the Women's Health Clinic.

The cheapest birth control offered by the Student Health Center is $25 dollars, although prices fluctuate frequently, Covell said.
