If you need a job, you can look for one right here on campus.

UNM will have its first on-campus job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Duck Pond.

It's a good place to find a career in academia, said Cheo Torres, vice president for Student Affairs.

"Our concern was that we wanted to see more students work on campus," he said. "The experience allows students to understand what higher education is about. It also allows them to consider this (the University) as a profession."

Departments have until Thursday to sign up for the event.

The fair will include student employment jobs and work-study jobs, said Jennifer Gomez-Chavez, director of Title V Education Initiatives.

A lot of students think they can't work on campus if they don't qualify for work study, but that's not true, she said.

The job fair will help students develop valuable professional connections, Gomez-Chavez said.

"There are more benefits (to working on campus)," she said. "Research shows the more they are connected, the better they do in school."

Student Bobby Perea said working on campus for Academic Technology Services lets him earn money without sacrificing his studies.

"It gives me a lot of time to catch up on homework," he said. "If I have a test the next day, and it's not busy at work, I can study. It's really close to class, too."

Perea said his job's flexible hours fit around his course work, as well.

"I come in during the morning for a couple hours before class, and I can come back after class and put in a few hours," he said.

Gomez-Chavez said there would be more on-campus job fairs.

"We're hoping to create a tradition," she said. "We're trying to work as a community to leverage resources and help our students as a community."
