UNMPD: Suspected bike thief arrested

Staff Report

For now, it's safer to park your bicycle on campus than it was last semester.

UNM Police arrested a man believed to be responsible for most of the bicycle thefts at the University, said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department.

"This is a suspect that has a large criminal history of larceny," he said. "We're confident that he's responsible for a vast majority of the thefts on campus - at least for the spring semester and part of the fall semester."

Edward Torres, 42, was arrested April 8 on charges of resisting or obstructing an officer, concealing identity and criminal damage to property.

Between Jan. 1 and April 7, there were 45 reported bicycle thefts, Davis said. Since April 8, there have been two, he said.

Davis said the arrest is the result of better communication between UNM Police and the Albuquerque Police Department.

He said the departments changed the way they work together to stop and prevent crime.

"We've started to take all of our reports and track them in a database that helps us to identify trends," he said.
