ASUNM's elections will be held online for the first time in the association's history today.

The format allows students to vote online from any computer with Internet access using their NetID and password.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Brittany Jaeger, president of ASUNM, said students can vote by clicking a link sent to their UNM e-mail accounts or visiting the voting Web site.

The site's address is:

https://esurvey.unm.edu:443

/s?s=ASUNM07

Booths with information about the elections are in the SUB, Zimmerman Library, Anderson Schools of Business, Dane Smith Hall, Johnson Center, Student Residence Center Commons, Mesa Vista Hall, Tow Diehm Athletics Facility and Centennial Library.

Nas Manole, ASUNM Elections Commission chairman, said he hopes online elections will increase voter turnout.

"This is kind of our guinea pig election for voter turnout," he said. "I see a possible increase in voters as a result of online elections, but that has yet to be determined."

Manole said he's not worried about anyone hacking the voting Web site.

"As far as the technology, it's all looking good, and I don't think we'll have any problems," he said. "ITS is on top of it and has all the necessary security measures in place."

He said the downside to online elections is the Elections Commission has less ability to monitor unethical campaigning.

"We don't have as much say as far as what the campaigners can say or do," he said. "So, it's more of a free-for-all for the campaigners."

Manole said there are two rules regarding online elections: Campaign material cannot be within 25 feet of the voting information stations, and campaigners cannot solicit votes via a laptop or any mobile device.

Any violation should be reported to Manole or Jason Belitz

at 277-0452.
