Theater

Daily Lobo: Why did you come to UNM?

Joanna Michnovicz: I live here. I grew up in Albuquerque. So, it's the best choice - the Lottery Scholarship.

DL: Why major in theater?

JM: I've been doing theater since I was a little kid. So, I've always enjoyed it. I just always liked being overdramatic, I guess.

DL: What was your favorite role?

JM: Sophomore year in high school, I played Rosalind in "As You Like It."

DL: Why did you like it?

JM: I had a lot of fun being believable. It's just a really good play. It's one of my favorites.

DL: What do you like about theater people?

JM: They're a hoot. They're just hilarious. There's a lot of life. They're not afraid of anything. It's just really fun.

DL: Do you have a favorite place in Albuquerque or something you really like about it?

JM: I like the mountains. I really like that we have them. I also really like the weather. We don't have any big swings. I'm trying to savor it as much as I can, because I'm moving to England in September.

DL: What for?

JM: For theater. I'm going to study there.

DL: Do you have any plans for what you're going to do there?

JM: Not really. Just visit as much of England and Europe as I can. That should be fun.

DL: Have you been to Europe before?

JM: I had a nine-hour layover in London on my way to Kenya.

DL: What did you go to Kenya for?

JM: I was visiting a couple of friends who were there for church.

DL: Did you have fun?

JM: It was fun 12-day trip. A little bit of culture shock. I had a lot of fun not having running water or electricity. Taking a shower without running water was a traumatic experience.

DL: Do you think it was a good experience?

JM: It was great. It was a lot of fun, and you realize that not everybody's an American.

DL: Is there something that sticks out in your mind about it?

JM: Yeah, the transportation. Nobody has cars, unless they're stupidly rich. Their public transportation is like those Volkswagen buses - but they're Toyota - and they shove 14 people in those things. They don't seat 14 people. You have to haggle with the guy for the price depending on where you're going. My friend was arguing with this guy in Swahili about the price, because they try to charge you a ton.

DL: What do you do for fun in Kenya?

JM: I don't really know. We went to their equivalent of the flea market.

DL: Did you go anywhere else in Africa?

JM: We went to Tanzania, I think, to go on a safari. That was pretty neat, being 15 feet away from a lion.
