The UNM men's basketball team officially announced Steve Alford as its new head coach today, signing the former Iowa Hawkeye head coach to a six-year deal.
Athletics Director Paul Krebs announced the hiring at a news conference Friday in the SUB Ballroom. Alford's contract is worth $975,000 per year. Former Lobo head coach Ritchie McKay's contract was worth $500,000 annually.
Alford is the 19th head basketball coach at UNM and spent the last eight seasons at Iowa, where he had four years remaining on his contract. Krebs said the Lobos will not have to buy out Alford's remaining contract with the Hawkeyes.
In his 16 years coaching college basketball, Alford compiled an overall record of 308-183. He took 11 teams to the postseason - including seven to the NCAA Tournament - and won two Big Ten Tournament titles with Iowa.
As a player, Alford won a national championship playing under Bob Knight at Indiana in 1987 and won a gold medal as part of the 1984 USA Olympic Basketball Team. He played in the NBA from 1987-1990 with Dallas and Golden State.
