Meredith Hay

Since June 2005, vice president for research at the University of Iowa, which received $360 million in external research funding during the past fiscal year.

Reports directly to the president.

Has served as assistant to the vice president for academic affairs at the University of Missouri System, director of the National Center for Gender Physiology at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine and associate director of the University of Missouri Life Sciences Center.

Bachelor's in psychology from the University of Colorado.

Master's in neurobiology from the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Doctorate in cardiovascular pharmacology from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.

Postdoctoral training in biophysics at the Baylor College of Medicine.

Daniel L¢pez

President of New Mexico Tech since 1993.

Has served as director of the Terminal Effects Research and Analysis Research Group, now the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center, which performs weapons and explosives research.

Has served as chairman of the New Mexico Council of University Presidents.

Experience in New Mexico state government, including chief of staff for the Senate Finance Committee, senior staff analyst for the House Appropriations and Finance Committee, secretary of the Department of Finance and Administration and secretary of the Employment Security Department.

Bachelor's, master's and doctorate in political science from UNM.

Herman Lujan

Provost and tenured professor of political science at California State

University-Los Angeles.

Experience in university and academic governance, institutional and statewide policy, strategic planning, government and business relations and community leadership.

Served as president of the University of Northern Colorado.

Served as chief academic officer of the Connecticut State University System.

Bachelor's from Saint Mary's College of California in political science and labor relations.

Master's from the University of California-Berkeley in political science.

Doctorate from the University of Idaho in political science.

Robert McGrath

Senior vice president for research at Ohio State University since 2004.

Directs an annual budget of $50 million and oversees the university's $590 million research program.

Oversees the Targeted Investments for Excellence program, which will distribute $110 million to 10 academic and research programs at Ohio State over a five-year period.

Served as a professor of engineering science and mechanics and associate vice president for research for five years at

Penn State.

Worked at Sandia National Laboratories on laser and plasma diagnostics and plasma and aerosol sciences.

Bachelor's in engineering science and two master's - one in mathematics and one in physics - from Penn State.

Doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan.

David Schmidly

CEO and president of the Oklahoma State University System since 2002.

Led efforts that have raised $850 million in

private donations and public funds for scholarships and infrastructure.

Oversaw plans for an $826 million construction program.

Launched a testing center to develop sensors to detect chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats.

Created a parents association to integrate families into higher education.

Served as president, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school at Texas Tech University.

Has published eight books on natural history and conservation.

Bachelor's and master's degrees in zoology from Texas Tech.

Doctorate in zoology from the University of

Illinois.
