Escapee slips past police, still at large

Staff Report

Brandon Medina, a man arrested on charges of armed robbery, escaped from sheriff's deputies at the UNM Hospital parking structure Tuesday morning, said Scott Baird, spokesman for the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.

UNM Police officers and sheriff's deputies searched Main Campus for Medina but could not find him.

He was still at large as of Tuesday night.

Deputies arrested Medina early Tuesday for an outstanding arrest warrant issued in May on charges of armed robbery, according to Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court documents.

Medina, 20, tried to escape and was injured while the deputies were taking him to jail, so he was taken to UNM Hospital, Baird said.

While in the parking structure, the handcuffed Medina fled from the deputies, Baird said.

"We don't really know what happened yet," he said. "Apparently, he (Medina) jumped off the parking structure to get away."

Baird said he is not sure how Medina managed to escape being recaptured.

"We are considering the possibility that someone else is helping him," he said.

Two alerts were sent to UNM e-mail addresses, warning people to stay away from Medina if they saw him.

Medina is 5 feet 7 inches tall, 130 pounds and Hispanic, and he has a tattoo on his left hand, according to the e-mails.

Medina could be dangerous, Baird said.

"I would say he is dangerous, only by virtue of the fact that he has an outstanding warrant for robbery," he said. "We don't know that he's armed, but we are considering him dangerous at this time."

Anyone who sees Medina should stay away, Baird said.

"If it were me coming into contact with him, I would assume that he was armed," he said. "Everyone should act as if he is a threat. Don't push him. Don't try to talk to him. Just call the authorities."
