System upgrades to prevent access to UNM Web sites

Staff Report

Many of UNM's computer systems will be down for maintenance Sunday.

The outage is caused by a $253,000 upgrade to the storage capacity of Information Technology Services' system, which hosts services including UNM e-mail, LoboWeb, WebCT and the UNM Web site.

The system will be down between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The upgrade is necessary because the University was running out of storage capacity, said Bill Adkins, chief information officer.

"If we don't do something very soon, we could run out within 30 days," he said. "That could cause some really serious problems."

Running out of space would cause many of the applications to stop working, which could be paralyzing to the University, he said.

The upgrade will add about 11 terabytes of storage, for a total of 18 terabytes - an amount that can hold more than 300,000 hours of music.

Adkins said it is unlikely the upgrade will take longer than planned.

"There's always a chance it will take longer, but I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get this done in the time period we've got," he said.

He said there is no chance that any data, such as e-mails or class information, will be lost during the process.
