Michael Miller

Freshman

Nutrition and dietetics

Why do you want to major in nutrition and dietetics?

I have always been interested in how the human body works. I started lifting weights a couple years ago and was more interested in how to build muscle as far as nutrition went - protein and creatine and those kinds of supplements and what they did to the body and how that worked versus just lifting weights on their own.

What do you want to do with your degree?

My neighbor is a dietician and works in a hospital in Alaska. It sounds really interesting. She gets to create diets for people with certain conditions, like diabetes. I think it would be really cool to sit down and create a diet and work with food and cook the food.

Do you cook at all?

On occasion. Not as much as I would like to. I don't really have the time. I will sit down and cook hamburger and pasta.

Do you have a job?

I work at Red Lobster in Rio Rancho. It's really cool. I have been working there for about nine months. I am just becoming a server now. It's kind of cool to be able to work with people, and of course it's working with food, and it's about nutrition and things like that. Of course, it's not really healthy.

Have you seen the movie "Waiting"?

I wish we could get away with some of that stuff at my work. It's really hard to judge a customer, and you are always trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. You do get the customer, and you walk up to the table and say, "Hi my name is Michael," and they say, "I want ice tea." You can't get your name out. It's actually pretty clean back there. Some of the things like the fryer and the shrimp scampi cooked in butter all day - those dishes are hard to clean.

How has your freshman experience been?

It is a different setting; a lot more laid back. If you don't show up to class, it's your own fault. Everybody is quiet, which is nice. We are used to teachers telling us to be quiet 40,000 times. I really like it.

What are you doing on top of the Center of the Universe (the sculpture near Ortega Hall)?

Just chilling. I was online one day and got really bored, and there was a guy named David Belle. He started a discipline called parkour. He is just a stunt guy, basically. He put out a movie a little while ago - it's really crazy. I used to ride BMX until I fractured my skull in two places - that was beastly. Decided to quit that, but the adrenaline junky never left me - climbing buildings, running up walls, jumping gaps.
