Search for new president still a work in progress

Staff report

UNM regent Raymond Sanchez said he is not ready to announce the members of the presidential search committee.

"I know the public is very interested in who's going to be on this committee," he said. "But unfortunately, I just wasn't able to get in touch with all the members in time."

Sanchez, the committee's chairman, gave an update on the search for a UNM president at Tuesday's regents' meeting.

He said he will try to announce the members of the committee within a week.

The committee will be in charge of putting out an advertisement for the position and recommending candidates to the regents.

Sanchez said the committee will have between 18 and 21 members.

"I think the public will be really happy with the diversity of this committee," he said.

Jamie Koch, president of the regents, said Sanchez and the other regents on the committee have done a good job.

They interviewed more than 200 people, including faculty, staff and students, asking them what qualities they wanted in a president.

"We've said from the very start that this committee will meet with everyone to make sure we know what they want in this president," he said. "Everyone should know that this is the most open process."
