Men's basketball free for students

Staff Report

UNM students will be able to go to Lobo men's basketball games for free this year.

Tim Cass, senior associate athletics director, announced the free tickets on Thursday in the SUB.

Ritchie McKay, head coach for the men's basketball team, said the free tickets will help the team's performance by increasing the number of students who attend.

"One of the things that's hugely critical to a college basketball team's success is the atmosphere in the arena," he said.

Brittany Jaeger, president of ASUNM, helped organize the free admission.

She said the free tickets will not only help the athletics department, but UNM as a

whole.

"When people get out and support the athletic programs, they really start to feel more involved with UNM," she said. "It makes them feel more like this is home."

Season tickets last year cost students $104. This season they would have cost $75, according to a UNM newsrelease.

Student Breeze Turner said the free tickets will help her save money.

"I go to every home game anyway," she said. "This will definitely make it a lot cheaper."

The free tickets are in celebration of The Pit's 40th

anniversary.

Students must show a student ID to get tickets. The tickets will be available at Popejoy Hall, the UNM Bookstore and The Pit. Students will be seated in sections 26 and 27. If those sections are filled, students will be able to sit in other sections as long as seats are available.
