Daily Lobo: What do you do as the president of the regents?
JK: The president of the Board of Regents presides at all meetings of the board and appoints committee chairs and members. The Board of Regents is responsible for the governance of the University. This responsibility includes fiduciary responsibility for assets and programs, establishment of goals and policies to guide the University and oversight of the functioning of the University, including the appointment of the president of the University.
DL: How does your job relate to students?
JK: I was a student at UNM and remain committed to providing an excellent education to all UNM students.
DL: What do you like about UNM?
JK: I have a long history with UNM. My mother graduated from UNM in 1918. My grandfather, Dr. William Henry Long, was a visiting professor starting in 1914.

Other family members are UNM graduates. I was on athletic scholarship as a football player, and I met my wife, Nene, while we both attended UNM.
DL: What are you working on to improve UNM?
JK: Increasing the retention rate; a learning center at UNM; access to UNM for all New Mexico students; quality medical care through the hospital and medical school; a strong athletics program and student housing.
DL: Do you have any advice for new students?
JK: Work hard, be honest, get involved in student government and always do the best you can.
