Brittany Jaeger, ASUNM president

Q & A

Daily Lobo: What do you do as the ASUNM president?

BJ: My main priority is to be the voice of the students. If students have concerns, they can come to me, and I can then channel that through the administration. Or, if the administration comes to me and says, 'What do students think?,' I serve as that voice. I serve as an adviser to the regents for everything from tuition increases to the changes to the Lottery Success Scholarship and anything that the regents ask for advice on. I do quite a bit of lobbying for what the students' best interests are.

DL: How does your job relate to students?

BJ: Primarily, it relates to them by being their voice if something comes up - like for the budget summit. We talk about tuition increases. Various groups come and say why they think that their department or their group deserves more money and to increase tuition to fund their group. We would tell them as students if that's a viable reason to increase the tuition. I think it's great but depends on how students utilize the ASUNM office.

DL: What do you like about UNM?

BJ: Everything. When I was a little girl, I wanted to come to UNM so bad, and now that I'm here, I just really love it. I really like how the administration is open to students' ideas in general.

DL: Do you have any advice for new students?

BJ: I think it's really important to get out and get involved. When I was a freshman I thought I needed to lay low and get used to college. The only way to really enjoy college is to get out and get involved in whatever they want to do. Just really get involved, because the college experience isn't just in the classroom it's also outside and vice versa.
