Phone upgrade to cause outages

Staff Report

UNM can expect rolling outages of phone service beginning June 19, as technicians move phone lines to a new switch, said Mark Reynolds, UNM's telecommunications operations manager.

Every telephone service on campus, including payphones, elevator phones and voice mail will be affected by the upgrade, Reynolds said.

He was not sure how long anyone can expect to be without service but up to 25 phones at a time will be affected.

However, people whose phones aren't functional for more than a few hours should contact telecommunications, he said.

"There's a lot of people working on this, and we're all doing our best to have the minimum possible impact on University business," he said.

The new switch offers more functionality and stability, he said. It will support voice over IP, which allows people to talk over network cables rather than telephone lines.

A list of buildings affected and a schedule of outages can be found on the telecommunications Web site: its.unm.edu/communications/switchupgrade.html.
