UNM regents approved a purchase of 236 acres in Rio Rancho for a future campus near the city's planned city hall.
A price has not been determined on the purchase, which was approved on Dec. 14.
UNM wants to build a 154-acre academic campus, a health sciences center and a research park.
The regents also approved a letter stating UNM wants to buy a second, 204-acre parcel west of Rio Rancho.

Dec. 16
University of New Mexico men's basketball player Anthony Teague left the UNM program on Dec. 16 after a short stint as a Lobo this season.
Teague, a junior, departed from the team because he was unhappy with his lack of playing time. On the season, the guard played a total of eight minutes. In those games he scored a total of 10 points.
Teague transferred from Dodge City Community College in Kansas to UNM after the 2004 season. If he transfers to another NCAA Division I program, Teague will have to sit out a whole year. He has yet to announce where he will transfer.
Dec. 19
UNM's Anderson Schools of Management were reaffirmed for accreditation in all their degree programs in December.
The accreditation was given by the board of directors of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
The Anderson schools are among 427 universities in the world to be accredited in both bachelor's and master's programs by the association.
Dec. 21
UNM is part of the team that has been awarded the contract to run Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Other New Mexico schools will also be part of the team, including New Mexico State University and New Mexico Tech.
Samuel Bodman, secretary of the Department of Energy, made the announcement in Washington, D.C., that Los Alamos National Security, Bechtel National, BWX Technologies and the Washington Group will manage and operate the national laboratory for the next seven years.
UNM will not be part of the everyday operations at the laboratory but will play a role in research and educational activities.
