UNM offers more eight-week courses

Staff Report

Wynn Goering, associate provost of UNM, announced last week the University will be offering eight-week classes for the second half of the semester. Registration began Monday and classes begin Oct. 17.

Physical Education courses, which are worth one credit, are offered in the second eight-weeks of the semester. However, academic courses have never been offered during that period, said UNM spokeswoman Karen Wentworth. She said the courses are worth three credits.

Georing said this is a pilot project and is in response to students who have expressed interest in wanting to extend popular classes like Urban Legends and Public Speaking.

"We know some classes are always in high demand," Goering said in a news release. "And we know some students would benefit from having additional enrollment options in the middle of the semester."

Wentworth said students were frustrated with not being able to register for some courses.

"There were a lot of closeouts," she said. "There were people who couldn't take these classes because it's full."

Goering said he doesn't know if the addition of courses will help students academically, but he will evaluate the success of the project.

Courses to be added are in the Communication & Journalism Department, Biology for Health Sciences and American Studies.
