Richard Berthold will not be allowed to teach at the University after all.
UNM Provost Reed Dasenbrock announced Friday he rejected the Honors Department's proposal to allow Berthold to teach a course on Greek history. He said in a news release the matter is confidential and will not be discussed publicly.
"However, it is important to note that his 9-11 comments were not the basis of the decision," the release stated.
Berthold retired from UNM in 2002, one year after he made controversial remarks on Sept. 11, 2001, during two of his lectures.
During two separate lectures in the Western civilization class he taught, he told students, "Anyone who can bomb the Pentagon gets my vote."
He apologized, but was told he could no longer teach undergraduates.
The class that would have been held in the spring semester was called Wrath of Achilles: Greek Warfare and Society.
Berthold declined to comment Sunday.
