Students give IDs to unknown man

Staff Report

Cmdr. James Daniels of the UNM Police Department said two students were robbed on campus early Monday morning.

Daniels said the students were robbed around 2 a.m. The students were not together at the time of the robberies, he said. The incidents took place in the parking lot between Coronado and Alvarado dormitories, he said.

No police reports are available yet, but the suspect is reportedly a 5-foot-8-inch Hispanic male. Daniels said the suspect has a moustache and drives a dark-colored SUV with circular custom taillights. He was said to be wearing a New Mexico State University T-shirt.

Daniels said the man approached the two students and asked them for their IDs, telling them he was a UNM security guard. When they gave their IDs to him, he told them to give him their ATM cards and Personal Identification Numbers, Daniels said. The man threatened the students with the knowledge of their addresses, Daniels said.

Daniels said one of the students gave the man his ATM card and PIN.

UNM security guards wear gray pullovers and black pants, Daniels warned, and always carry identification.

Daniels is asking anyone with information to call the UNM Police main dispatch at 277-2241.
