Daily Lobo: What advice can you give students to help manage their time better?
Randy Boeglin: Get a day planner or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).
DL: What are the most reoccurring problems that students come to you for?
RB: Managing finances, keeping track of obligations and complex relationship issues.
DL: What advice would you give to students who are having a similar problem?
RB: Strike a balance in your life between personal needs and school. First, plan to have a plan - make it a simple, clear road map to strike a balance between school and life. Sharpen your time management skills - take a class in this if needed. Identify activities that are fun and that energize you and plug them in to your life routines. In addition, learn to be forgiving of yourself if you are less than perfect - the only people always at their best all the time are the mediocre ones.
DL: What are some of UNM's resources that you think students should take more advantage of?
RB: UNM is resource rich, students should be aware that there are many, many places available. Here is my list of hidden gems resource areas: Ethnic student services centers, residence hall RA's, departmental administrative front desk support staff - they are gatekeepers and repositories of practical knowledge of how to help students get help and the Dean of Students Office (who are) skilled listeners and referral agents.
DL: Through the years, how have you seen the traditional student change?
RB: Students' lives are more complex. Students work more and are more driven to be successful.
