Saundra Brown-Savoy took off time from her job as head of the Health Sciences legal office to study for the New Mexico State Bar Exam in January and February.
But Susan Carkeek, vice president of Human Resources, said she wasn't sure if Brown-Savoy had taken the exam, which took place on Feb. 22 and 23.
"I assume she did. She took time off," she said.
She was one of the highest paid lawyers at UNM, but had not taken the New Mexico Bar Exam, the Albuquerque Journal reported in August.
Brown-Savoy resigned Friday for personal reasons. Her salary was $144,375 when she quit.
Carkeek said Brown-Savoy's resignation was unexpected.

The position of deputy counsel of Health Sciences Center Counsel required she be licensed to practice law in the state.
Carkeek said the job description for her position allows for a person to get a temporary license if they move to the state.
