E-mail list promotes recycling

by Brandale Mills

Only one student used the recycling bin by Casitas in the SUB between noon and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Linda McCormick, manager of the Hazardous Waste Program, said several hundred recycling locations are on campus, but many go unseen by students.

Student Laymone Davis said the SUB is the only place he knows of on campus where he can recycle.

He said if he knew of other places, he would use them because it would make recycling easier for him.

McCormick started an e-mail list in the summer of 2003 to provide answers to questions about where, how and what to recycle.

"With close to 300 names on the listserv, I am now able to send out information to more people, making it available to them," McCormick said.

She said she started the list not only to keep people informed about recycling but to get them motivated about it.

"I am enthusiastic about recycling, and I hope to get others as enthused as I am," she said.

Over the summer, McCormick introduced herself to people around campus and asked them if they were interested in getting information about how to help with recycling. McCormick is trying to get the word out in as many ways as she can.

She said it's difficult to reach UNM students and get them informed because a lot of the recycling programs on campus are geared toward the staff and faculty.

"I basically talk to anyone who can sit still and listen," she said.

She has made presentations to ASUNM and a business class, she said.

McCormick said the mailing list should help by making the information accessible to more people.

"It's very difficult to get information out to a large number of people," she said. "This makes recycling more readily available to people."
